Name changes for trustees and executors

Last reviewed August 2026UK Deed Poll Bureau Editorial Team3 min read

General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.

Trustees and executors act under their personal name. If that name changes, the trust or estate continues unaffected, but the records should be updated so there is no doubt that the person acting is the same person named in the trust or will.

If you are a trustee

Tell the trust's bank, any professional advisors and HM Land Registry for registered trust land. Update the trust's records and keep certified copies of the deed poll with the trust papers so future trustees can trace the connection.

If you are an executor

Your appointment in the will is not affected by a name change. Keep the deed poll as evidence that you and the named executor are the same person, and provide it to banks, HMRC and beneficiaries during the administration.

HM Land Registry and other registers

  • Update the proprietor name on any registered land title.
  • Notify the trust's bank and investment managers.
  • Keep certified copies of the deed poll with the trust or estate file.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to update a trust if a trustee changes name?▼

The trust continues, but the trustee's name on the register and on trust documents should be updated. Tell HM Land Registry for any registered trust land and update the trust's bank and account records.

What about executors named in a will?▼

If an executor changes name, the will is still valid. Keep the deed poll as evidence of the connection; the executors can prove their appointment and their current name when acting.

Do I need to tell HM Land Registry?▼

If the trust or estate holds registered land, yes. HM Land Registry can update the proprietor's name on production of a deed poll so the register matches the current name.
