Editorial policy
How we research, maintain and correct guidance on DeedPoll.online. DeedPoll.online is an independent private UK service and is not affiliated with HM Government.
Primary sources
We cite UK government and regulator sources first — usually GOV.UK, nidirect, National Records of Scotland, the Royal Courts of Justice or relevant public-register guidance.
Source checking
Substantive procedural, fee and eligibility claims are checked against primary UK sources when indexable guides are published or updated. Claims that cannot be verified are qualified or withheld from indexing.
Hedged claims
Where an organisation can set its own evidence rules, we say so. We avoid absolute wording such as "accepted everywhere" unless a source supports it.
Our standards
Our guides are written to help UK residents understand and complete a name change by deed poll. They are general information, not individual legal advice. If your situation is unusual — for example a court order is in place, or you are an overseas national with a complex immigration status — the Law Society can help you find a regulated solicitor.
We do not claim that any deed poll is universally accepted. Individual organisations including HM Passport Office, the DVLA, banks and courts may set their own evidence requirements, and those requirements can change. Where we describe acceptance we either cite a primary source or use hedged wording such as "most UK organisations".
We do not publish customer numbers, review counts, acceptance percentages or rejection percentages unless we have a genuine, verifiable basis for the figure.
Freshness and review cycle
A guide only displays a "Last reviewed" date when a substantive content check has actually taken place. We do not change dates merely to make a page appear fresher in search results.
When we update a guide substantively, we can refresh the visible review date and, where applicable, the dateModified field in structured data. Time-sensitive fees and procedures are checked against the relevant primary source.
How automation is used
We may use AI-assisted and automated tools to help structure drafts, identify content gaps, maintain technical SEO and compare published guidance with source material. Automation does not replace checking important legal-process, fee or eligibility claims against primary sources.
Pages containing statistical or research claims that have not been adequately evidenced can be kept out of the search index until the evidence is verified. This is preferable to publishing uncertain claims simply to attract search traffic.
Corrections
If you spot an error in one of our guides — or have a sources-based improvement — please write to us. We update our guides in response to reader feedback and to changes in the law.
