A professionally prepared UK deed poll certificate
The legal basis for changing your name in the UK
UK law does not require you to ask a court, a solicitor or any government department before changing your name. Under the common law of England, Wales and Northern Ireland — and the corresponding rules of Scots law — you have the right to adopt any name you choose, at any time, for any reason. A deed poll is simply the document used to evidence that decision to other people and organisations.
Once your deed poll is drafted, signed by you in the presence of two independent adult witnesses and dated, it is immediately effective — you can start using your new name straight away. The same document is accepted as evidence of your name change by HM Passport Office, the DVLA, HMRC, UK banks and building societies, the NHS, employers, schools, universities, utility providers and every other UK organisation. No court order is required and no enrolment with the Royal Courts of Justice is necessary, except in a small number of specific situations.
Witnesses must be over 18, independent of you (not a spouse, partner, sibling, child or other relative) and not living at your address. Friends, colleagues or neighbours are perfect. They must watch you sign and date the document and then add their own signature, name, address and occupation. The witnesses are not certifying the legal validity of your name change — they are simply confirming that they saw you sign the document.
For most people, an unenrolled deed poll is the right choice: it is identical in legal effect to an enrolled deed poll and is accepted without question by UK institutions. Enrolling your deed poll with the Royal Courts of Justice is optional, costs more and is only required in a small number of circumstances — for example, some overseas authorities or for British nationals living abroad. Our service prepares unenrolled deed polls; if you would prefer to enrol, you can do so directly with the courts.
Because the right to change your name is yours by law, you are free to prepare your own deed poll at no cost. What you pay our service for is professional preparation, checking, printing, posting and support — not the legal right to change your name itself. The result is a document you can rely on from the moment it is signed and witnessed, with our 30-day money-back guarantee as standard.
