What evidence do you need?

GOV.UK says that for other name changes you can use a deed poll, statutory declaration or affidavit. You must also provide proof of previous name changes and evidence that you are using your new name, such as a payslip or a letter from your local council.

  • A document linking your old and new names, such as a deed poll.
  • Proof of any previous name changes.
  • Evidence that you are using the new name for all purposes.
  • Your existing passport and any other documents requested by the application service.

Apply online or on paper

The standard online service costs £102 for an adult passport. A paper application costs £115.50. Fill in the application using the name you want printed on the passport and follow the document instructions supplied by HM Passport Office.

How long does it take?

HM Passport Office says you will usually get your passport within 3 weeks. It can take longer if more information or an interview is needed. The processing clock starts when HM Passport Office receives your documents.

Do not book travel until you have a valid passport

GOV.UK explicitly advises against booking travel until the new passport has arrived. Your new passport will have a different passport number, and unexpired visas in the old passport may be affected by the name change.

Urgent services

The 1 week Fast Track service can be used to renew, replace or change an adult or child passport and currently costs £192 for a standard adult passport. The 1 day Premium service costs £239.50 for a standard adult passport and is only available for an eligible adult passport renewal. Check eligibility before assuming an urgent service can be used for your application.

Marriage or civil partnership

If you are taking a spouse's or civil partner's surname, a deed poll is not normally required. Use the marriage or civil partnership route in HM Passport Office guidance and provide the evidence it asks for.
