After your name change

Who to notify after changing your name

Apply for your deed poll first, then work through this checklist in order. Each entry tells you which UK organisation to notify, what evidence they need, and where to find detailed instructions. The certificate is only the start of the journey — most institutions only accept your new name once they have been told.

Do it within 30 days

HM Passport Office, DVLA, banks and HMRC all expect you to update their records promptly — usually within 30 days of changing your name. Order your deed poll first to avoid missing deadlines that affect tax, pay and benefits.

Identity & government

Update your primary identity documents first — every other organisation will ask for these as evidence.

Passport (HM Passport Office)

Apply online or by post; send your deed poll and current passport.

Driving licence (DVLA / DVA in Northern Ireland)

Update your photocard licence and counterpart free of charge using a D1 (or DL1 in NI).

HMRC (tax & National Insurance)

Update PAYE, Self Assessment, Child Benefit and State Pension records together — HMRC links them.

Electoral register

Contact your local electoral registration office; update your registration before the next polling card is issued.

NHS / GP records

Take your deed poll to your GP surgery; they will update your medical and NHS number records.

Financial accounts & property

Banks, building societies, mortgage lenders and HM Land Registry all expect an unchanged legal name on the title and account.

Bank accounts & cards

Update at branch or via online banking; expect a new debit/credit card to follow.

Mortgage & savings accounts

Tell your lender; you'll typically need to send a certified copy of your deed poll.

Land Registry (registered property title)

File form AP1 to update the registered name on your freehold or leasehold title.

Pension schemes (workplace & personal)

Notify each provider; the pension scheme administrator may ask for documentary evidence.

Insurance policies (home, life, car, travel)

Notify each insurer; continuation depends on the policy terms — don't let cover lapse.

Work, education & subscriptions

Most employers and universities can update their records from your original witnessed deed poll.

Employer / payroll

Notify HR and payroll immediately so PAYE and pension contributions stay linked to your HMRC record.

Universities & professional bodies

Update your degree record and any regulated professional registrations (GMC, SRA, FCA-style).

Companies House (directors/shareholders)

File form AP01 / TM01 changes for yourself as director or shareholder of any UK limited company.

Social media accounts

Most platforms let you update display name instantly; check verification processes for blue-tick handles.

Everyday services

Councils and utilities often update on simple notification — but the named account holder must match the meter/bill.

Council tax

Tell your local council; the account stays the same but the named liable person must match your name on the deeds.

Utility providers (gas, electricity, water, broadband)

Notify each provider; same billing reference — no break in supply.

Mobile phone & broadband account holder

Update the named account holder to keep the contract valid; some networks ask for ID verification.

DWP / benefits

Notify DWP for Universal Credit, ESA, PIP, State Pension and other benefits — they cross-check with HMRC.

How to keep the cost down

  • Use a single, witnessed unenrolled deed poll — most institutions accept it.
  • Order 2–3 certified copies if you can; passport, DVLA and bank usually want to retain one.
  • Update HMRC and your employer in the same week so PAYE and tax records stay linked.
  • Land Registry and mortgage lenders may require a certified copy (signed by a solicitor) — check before sending original documents.
