After your name change

How to Change the Name on Your UK Mortgage and Savings Account After a Deed Poll [2026 Guide]

You update the name on a UK mortgage and savings account by notifying your lender and savings provider in writing and submitting either the original or a certified copy of your signed and witnessed deed poll. Each product (current account, savings, ISA, bond) is usually held on a separate account record, so ask your bank to update all linked products in one sitting.

Quick answer

Phone or write to your mortgage lender's customer services team. Send the original OR a certified copy of your deed poll (your lender tells you which). Tell them to update the account name, the direct debit, the monthly statement and any linked savings, ISA or product the same week. If your name also appears on the property title at HM Land Registry, file form AP1 once the lender confirms the account has been updated.

Mortgage name change — step by step

  1. Sign your deed poll in front of two independent witnesses.
  2. Call your lender's customer services line and tell them you want a name change on the mortgage account. They confirm what evidence they need (usually the original deed poll or a solicitor-certified copy).
  3. Submit the evidence by post or via the lender's secure upload portal. Keep proof of posting (Royal Mail Special Delivery) and a photocopy of the deed poll before sending the original.
  4. Ask them to update the direct debit in your new name so monthly mortgage payments continue without interruption.
  5. Request updated paperwork — a new mortgage offer letter, annual statement and any product transfer paperwork showing your new name.
  6. If your name is on the Land Registry title, file form AP1 separately with HMLR once the lender confirms the mortgage account is updated — see our Land Registry guide.

Joint mortgages

If only one borrower changes their name, the joint mortgage continues — the account keeps the same mortgage number and product. Both borrowers do not need to attend the bank; the changing borrower submits the deed poll and an ID check, while the joint holder's details stay the same. If you are changing both borrowers' names (e.g. both following a marriage), submit two deed polls in one pack so the lender updates both records in one batch.

Savings, ISAs and building society passbooks

  • Update each savings account, ISA, SIPP and bond individually — ask your bank's branch staff to cover all linked accounts in one visit.
  • For ISAs, your ISA manager updates your HMRC ISA record at the same time — the tax-free status is unaffected.
  • For building society passbooks and share accounts, take the passbook to a branch with your deed poll and ID. The passbook is reprinted with your new name.
  • For premium bonds (NS&I), phone NS&I or write with your deed poll and holder's number.

Common mistakes

  • Updating the current account but leaving savings, ISAs and bonds in the old name — withdrawal delays at maturity.
  • Sending the original deed poll without keeping a photocopy or a backup certified copy.
  • Forgetting to update the direct debit name so the mortgage payment fails to match.
  • Updating the mortgage but not the Land Registry title — a future sale stalls while the conveyancer reconciles the names.
  • Not telling pension providers linked to the mortgage lender's group (e.g. an L&G pension with a Lloyds mortgage) — see our pension guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will my mortgage lender accept an unenrolled deed poll?

Almost always. High-street lenders (Halifax, Nationwide, Santander, HSBC, Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds) accept an original signed and witnessed unenrolled deed poll as evidence of a name change. Some building societies or smaller lenders may also ask for a certified copy certified by a solicitor — check with your lender's customer services before posting originals.

Do I need to remortgage to change the name on the title?

No. A simple name change on the mortgage account (with no change of borrower or loan amount) is processed as a customer administrative update — you keep the same mortgage product, interest rate and term. You only need to remortgage if you are also changing the borrower structure (e.g. removing a partner).

Are my savings accounts and ISAs updated automatically when I update my current account?

Not always. Each savings account, ISA, bond and SIPP is usually held on a separate account record at the provider. Ask your bank to update all linked products at the same time, and confirm in writing — otherwise you may end up with a current account in your new name and savings products still in your old name, which can cause withdrawal friction.

Will changing my name affect my mortgage offer or interest rate?

No. A simple name change has no impact on the mortgage product, interest rate, monthly payment or loan term. The lender links the updated account to the same credit check and affordability assessment it used when you took out the mortgage.
