How to change your name

Change your name using a solicitor

General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.

A solicitor is one of several ways to change your name in the UK. It is perfectly valid, but for most straightforward name changes it is not necessary — you can prepare a deed poll yourself for free, or use an online preparation service for a small fee.

When a solicitor helps

A solicitor can be useful where your name change is tied to another matter — for example a contested child name change, a name change linked to a financial settlement, or where a foreign authority insists on a sworn document. For a simple adult name change, a solicitor adds cost without adding legal weight.

Solicitor vs online service vs DIY

  • DIY: free; you draft, sign and witness the document yourself.
  • Online preparation service: a small fee for correctly formatted wording, a name check and printed copies.
  • Solicitor: typically the most expensive; useful for complex or contested situations.

A note on legal validity

An unenrolled deed poll has the same legal effect whoever prepares it. What makes it effective is correct wording, your signature and two independent witnesses — not who drafted it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a solicitor to change my name?▼

No. You can change your name by deed poll yourself at no cost, or use an online preparation service. A solicitor is an option but is not required and does not make the document more legally valid.

What does a solicitor charge to change a name?▼

Solicitors commonly charge from around £100 to £300 plus VAT for preparing a deed poll, though prices vary. An online preparation service or a DIY deed poll is significantly cheaper.

Is a solicitor's deed poll more legally valid?▼

No. An unenrolled deed poll prepared by a solicitor has the same legal effect as one you prepare yourself, provided it is correctly worded, signed and witnessed.
