Deed poll for 16 and 17 year olds
General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.
The rules for changing a child's name change once the young person turns 16. A 16 or 17 year old is usually old enough to change their own name by deed poll without needing everyone with parental responsibility to agree — though the exact position differs between the UK jurisdictions.
England and Wales
At 16, a young person is generally treated as having sufficient understanding to change their own name. A deed poll in their own name, signed by them and witnessed by two independent adults, is usually accepted. Where someone with parental responsibility objects, the matter can be referred to the court, but most changes at this age proceed without dispute.
Scotland
In Scotland, 16 is the age of legal capacity for the purpose of changing a name. A 16 or 17 year old can record a change of name with the National Records of Scotland without parental consent. The position is therefore clearer north of the border.
Practical steps
- Prepare a deed poll in the young person's name, signed and witnessed as usual.
- Use it to update school, college, bank and GP records.
- Keep the original safe — exam boards and future employers may ask to see it.
