After you change your name

Change your name on a rental or tenancy agreement

Last reviewed August 2026UK Deed Poll Bureau Editorial Team3 min read

General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.

A private tenancy agreement records who the tenant is. When you change your name by deed poll you should tell your landlord or letting agent so their records, the deposit protection scheme and any references match your new name.

Telling your landlord or letting agent

Write to your landlord or agent confirming your new name and enclosing a copy of your deed poll. Ask them to update the tenancy file and the deposit protection record. Most agents keep an electronic record and can amend the tenant name without issuing a new contract.

Joint tenancies

If you hold a joint tenancy, only your name changes; the other tenant and the terms stay the same. Both tenants should sign any addendum so there is no confusion later about who agreed what.

What to provide

  • A copy of your deed poll (a photocopy is usually enough for a landlord).
  • Proof of your new name, such as an updated bank statement or utility bill.
  • Your new contact details if they have also changed.

Frequently asked questions

Does my landlord have to update my tenancy agreement?▼

A private landlord or letting agent should update their records to show your new name. They are not obliged to issue a brand-new tenancy agreement, but most will amend the existing one or add a signed addendum.

Do I need a new tenancy agreement after a name change?▼

Not normally. The tenancy continues on its existing terms; only the tenant's name changes. A short addendum or updated headed letter is usually enough.

What if my landlord refuses to update my name?▼

Your legal right to use your new name does not depend on the landlord's agreement. Keep proof you told them. For most day-to-day purposes your deed poll plus evidence of address is sufficient.
