Change your name with your trade union
General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.
Trade unions keep membership records in your name and may issue membership cards, run ballots and collect subscriptions against that name. After a deed poll, tell your branch so the records match.
Telling your union
Contact your branch secretary or the union's membership team with a copy of your deed poll. They will update the central membership system and reissue any card or certificate in your new name.
Subscriptions and reps
If you pay union subscriptions through your salary, make sure payroll and the union both show the new name so the deduction records reconcile. If you are a workplace rep, ask the union to update your rep accreditation and contact details.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to tell my trade union about a name change?▼
Yes. Your union keeps membership records and may issue membership cards, subscriptions and ballots in your name. Tell them so your records stay accurate.
How do I update my union membership?▼
Contact your branch or the membership team with a copy of your deed poll. They will update your name on the membership system and reissue any card or certificate.
What about union subscriptions and workplace reps?▼
If subscriptions come off your pay, the payroll name should match. Tell your employer and the union so the deduction records and rep accreditation use your new name.
