Updating V5C, MOT and vehicle registration after a name change

Last reviewed August 2026UK Deed Poll Bureau Editorial Team5 min read

General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.

Quick summary

After changing your name you have three separate vehicle-related records to update: the V5C vehicle logbook (registered keeper), MOT history (linked to V5C), and your motor insurance. Private registration plate documents (V750 or V778) need a separate update. The DVLA returns your original deed poll certificate with the new V5C; you may send a certified copy if you prefer to keep the original.

Updating the V5C logbook

The V5C is the registered-keeper certificate for any UK-registered vehicle. To update it after a name change:

  1. Complete Section 6 (Keepers' Details) of your V5C with your new name.
  2. Write a covering letter stating the change and your contact details.
  3. Enclose your original signed deed poll certificate (or a certified copy) and the V5C.
  4. Post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.

The DVLA returns your V5C updated with your new name within 4 weeks, plus your deed poll certificate. Visit the DVLA V5C update guidance for the full procedure and any current changes.

MOT and DVSA records

The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is vehicle-specific — it doesn't have a "registered keeper name" of its own. However, the vehicle's MOT history record (held by the DVSA and searchable on GOV.UK) is linked to the V5C. Once you've updated the V5C, the MOT history is re-linked automatically.

If you are an MOT test station operator, your DVSA personal record also needs updating; contact DVSA Customer Service at gov.uk/DVSA with your deed poll.

Private plate retention (V750 / V778)

If you hold a private registration:

  • V750 — Certificate of Entitlement (the right to assign a new private plate) issued by DVLA on purchase. Update via the DVLA personalised registration enquiries team.
  • V778 — Retention Document (a plate you've held off a vehicle) needs the same update path. Submit your deed poll and the V778 to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DS.

Both documents are re-issued in your new name; the fee is normally nil if the documents are still valid.

Motor tax and motor insurance

Motor tax (vehicle excise duty): the V5C update automatically updates the motor tax record (it's the same registered-keeper record). No separate action required.

Motor insurance: notify your motor insurer in writing as soon as you have the V5C updated; enclose a copy of the deed poll. Most insurers update the policy at no extra cost and re-issue your certificate of motor insurance in the new name. A no-name-match between your V5C and your insurance certificate can invalidate your policy under the Road Traffic Act 1988, so update both promptly.
