Change your name on gym and club memberships
General UK name-change information, not individual legal advice. Requirements can vary by organisation and UK jurisdiction; where a decision matters, check the relevant official guidance.
Gyms, leisure centres and membership clubs keep your name on their membership system and often link it to a direct debit. After a name change, update the membership so the records, any membership card and the payment all match.
Updating the membership
Ask at reception or contact member services with a copy of your deed poll. They will update the name on the system and, if you have a photo membership card, reissue it in your new name.
Direct debits and billing
Make sure the name on the gym's direct debit matches the name on your bank account after you update it. A mismatch can occasionally cause a payment to be queried, so update both sides around the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Will my gym change my membership name?▼
Most gyms and leisure centres will update the name on your membership on production of a deed poll. Some may also ask for photo ID in your new name.
Do I need to show my deed poll to a gym?▼
Usually a copy is enough for their records. If you have a photo membership card, ask them to reissue it in your new name.
What about the direct debit?▼
Make sure the direct debit still matches the name on your bank account after you update it. If the gym billing name and your bank name differ, update both so payments are not refused.
