Change your name on Barclays UK after a deed poll

Barclays says personal name changes can be completed in branch or by post. Required evidence depends on whether you are changing a surname only, a first/middle/full name or a title.

First-party source checked

We checked this procedure against Barclays's own published guidance on 9 September 2026. Bank procedures change, so use the official page as the final authority before sending documents.

Current procedure

  1. 1

Visit a Barclays branch with original evidence, or write to Barclays with certified copies.

Evidence to prepare

  • For first, middle or full-name changes, Barclays asks for government-issued photo ID showing the new name.
  • For surname-only changes, Barclays lists a marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll certificate.
  • Barclays states that self-created or online deed polls can be accepted when signed and witnessed.

Evidence rules can differ by product and by the reason for the name change. A deed poll is evidence of a change of name; it does not override a bank's customer-identification requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official source for changing my name with Barclays?

This guide was checked against Barclays's own published customer guidance on 2026-09-09. Use the official-source link on this page before submitting documents because bank procedures can change.

Will an unenrolled deed poll always be accepted on its own?

Not necessarily. Banks set their own evidence policies. Some accept an unenrolled deed poll directly, while others require extra ID in the new name or another supporting document.

Should I send an original deed poll by post?

Follow Barclays's current instructions. Some banks ask for originals, some accept certified copies and some provide a digital upload route. Do not post irreplaceable identity documents unless the bank specifically tells you to.

Need proof of a name change?

You can prepare an unenrolled deed poll yourself for free using GOV.UK guidance. Our paid service is for document preparation and support; individual organisations decide what evidence they will accept.
