Change your name on Santander UK after a deed poll

Santander currently requires a branch visit for a personal name change. Bring personal ID, proof of account ownership and supporting evidence of the change.

First-party source checked

We checked this procedure against Santander's own published guidance on 9 September 2026. Bank procedures change, so use the official page as the final authority before sending documents.

Current procedure

  1. 1

Visit a Santander branch with the required evidence.

Evidence to prepare

  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate, decree absolute, enrolled deed poll, statutory declaration, final court order or adoption certificate, depending on the reason for the change.
  • For an unenrolled deed poll, Santander says you also need one ID document in your new name, such as a passport or driving licence.
  • Personal ID and proof of account ownership.

Evidence rules can differ by product and by the reason for the name change. A deed poll is evidence of a change of name; it does not override a bank's customer-identification requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official source for changing my name with Santander?

This guide was checked against Santander's own published customer guidance on 2026-09-09. Use the official-source link on this page before submitting documents because bank procedures can change.

Will an unenrolled deed poll always be accepted on its own?

Not necessarily. Banks set their own evidence policies. Some accept an unenrolled deed poll directly, while others require extra ID in the new name or another supporting document.

Should I send an original deed poll by post?

Follow Santander's current instructions. Some banks ask for originals, some accept certified copies and some provide a digital upload route. Do not post irreplaceable identity documents unless the bank specifically tells you to.

Need proof of a name change?

You can prepare an unenrolled deed poll yourself for free using GOV.UK guidance. Our paid service is for document preparation and support; individual organisations decide what evidence they will accept.
